Orientation to Palliative Care Course
A 3 day course for registered nurses and allied health professionals working with palliative care patients and their families/whanau.

Palliative Care Education for Care Assistants
Level & Prerequisites:
Introductory/Intermediate
Currently working as a health care assistant / home care worker
 
Aim:
These four seminars, which are endorsed by Hospice New Zealand, have been designed to provide health care assistants / home care workers with key principles, practical knowledge and skills of palliative care.
 
Designed for:
This course is suitable for Health Care Assistants / Home Care Workers working in the residential aged care/community sector who require a comprehensive understanding of their role in the context of providing palliative care support for patients/residents and their families/whanau.

Syringe Driver Competency Workshops 2012
­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­ Level & Prerequisites:
Introductory/Intermediate
Registered/Enrolled Nurses
 
Aim:
To assist Registered Nurses/Enrolled Nurses to increase their knowledge, skills and competencies in all aspects of Syringe Driver Management.
 
Designed for:
Registered Nurses/Enrolled Nurses who are required to use Syringe Drivers in their clinical practice.
 
Learning outcomes:
On successful completion of this Hospice New Zealand (HNZ) Niki T34 Syringe Driver Competency Programme, participants will be able to:
 
  • State the rationale for use of a Niki T34 Syringe Driver in Palliative Care
  • Set up an infusion using the Niki T34 Syringe Driver
  • Identify commonly used medications, compatibilities and side effects
  • Identify suitable insertion sites
  • Calculate drug and diluent  volumes
  • State the observations required during the use of a Niki T43 Syringe Driver
  • Understand best practice principles,  for effective and safe use of a Niki T34 Syringe Driver
 
The session comprises of:
 
  • A PowerPoint presentation covering the theory of Syringe Driver Management
  • A written test which includes drug calculations
  • An opportunity for ‘hands-on’ with a Niki T34 Syringe Driver and associated equipment
 
Participants will be given the HNZ Syringe Driver Competency Programme Niki T34 Workbook which they keep.
 
On successful completion of the programme and test, the participant will be issued with a certificate of attainment. HNZ currently recommends that all registered nurses/enrolled nurses complete the competency programme every 2 years.

Genesis Oncology Trust Palliative Care Lecture Series 2012
Hospice North Shore is one of the many sites across New Zealand that holds the monthly Genesis Oncology Trust Lecture Series audio conference on the first Thursday of the month from 7:30am to 8:30am at North Shore Hospice, 7 Shea Terrace, Takapuna. Please enter through the back door located approximately half way down the carpark at the rear of the building.
 
This education opportunity is designed for healthcare professionals with an interest in palliative care.  We welcome clinicians from all medical and care facilities to join us.
 
There will be a light breakfast served from 7am in the Day Room Lounge at the top of the stairs.
