And This Is How It Started...

About 5 years ago, I noticed that the Hospice retail shop in Birkenhead, of which I was the manager, was receiving many high calibre books as donations. This sowed the seed of opening a Hospice shop specifically selling books and associated items. A business plan followed, and was supported by the Head Office. It took a little longer to find premises, but all good things do come to those who wait and are committed to their dream.
Our first bookshop opened at 2 Hammond Place over 2 years ago, and when we were offered larger premises at no.6 Hammond place, we moved into our new home.
Our new shop is a bright cheery place, full of books suiting many tastes and pockets. As well as our main area, we have a Bargain Room, where our top price is $2! It is proving popular with customers who love to rummage. We have our own Trademe site, and sell to people throughout New Zealand.
The volunteers, who work in the store, are helpful, knowledgeable and eager to assist the most discerning booklover. Often a request for a book leads to interesting and sometimes hilarious conversations, which have no bearing on books at all! With pleasant music playing in the background, cosy seating and a warm atmosphere, the shop has become a place for regulars to pop in.. Those who are new to our shop, often compliment it on its ambience and variety, often exclaiming it’s like a REAL bookshop!
The seed of many years ago has now morphed into a community-based shop that provides much needed funding, to provide for the terminally ill in our community.
