Selaks Founders Reserve Hawkes Bay Syrah 2004

Only in years of exceptional quality, the finest grapes are selected to create the Selaks Founders Reserve range wines.

The 2004 Selaks Founders Reserve Syrah was selected from two Hawkes Bay vineyards; the Claughton Estate Vineyard on Ngatarawa Rd and our Mohaka Vineyard, from which small parcels were chosen. During winemaking, the wine was pressed directly to a combination of 50% new French and American oak and 50% one year old French oak barriques. The wine completed malo-lactic fermentation and remained in oak for a further 14 months of maturation. The wine received light fining and filtration prior to bottling.

On the nose there is a distinctive varietal bouquet of blackberry and white pepper. The palate is rich and powerful, laden with layers of blackberry, cherry and plum, with a complex layering of cigar box and spice. It is beautifully structured, with excellent weight and balance, underpinned by fine tannins. The finish lingers warm and opulent.

Brett Fullerton and his winemaking team, based at our Hawkes Bay winery, are collectively responsible for creating this delicious, benchmark syrah.

Only a few hundred cases of this hand-crafted wine are produced.

It is a great food partner to the fuller style red meat dishes.
