Vic Williams Selection Marlborough Chardonnay/Pinot Noir/Pinot Meunier 2001

Finding the perfect wine to match a particular dish is a thoroughly enjoyable exercise, and that is what this wonderful day is all about.

The multi award-winning Méthode Traditionelle sparkling wine you enjoyed as you arrived is designed to set your palate up for the many delights to follow and because it is vivacious and lively, but with considerable depth of flavour, it does so perfectly.

It wears my name because I am fiercely proud of it, but I can't claim the credit for its creation. It represents the combined skills of Mike deGaris, an Australian-born winemaker and wine judge who has one of the sharpest palates in the business, and Gary Duke, long-time winemaker for Hunter's Wines in Marlborough. Mike is the former CEO of Cardmember Wines, the company that operates the New Zealand Wine Society, and this wine is available only from that group.

It was made by the full method of Champagne, using that famous region's three great grapes. It is the inclusion of Pinot Meunier, not a common variety in New Zealand, that gives it an earthy richness to go with Chardonnay's citric characters and Pinot Noir's fruit depth.
