I helped on the Raffle ticket selling at Albany earlier this year.
There were passers-by aplenty and many stopped and bought a ticket or two or a book, but many did not. There would be scores of reasons for this and I respected their decision. However, out of the blue a group of five young people, (late teens, early 20's) stopped at the table and asked if they could help me sell tickets. One, Jason, immediately said he knew all about Hospice as his mother had died in one when he was 11 and he spoke with feeling and deep appreciation of their care. Jason then introduced me to his friends, another was Carl and they had a girlfriend with them.
I want to tell you that for well over an hour they advertised the cause to the people so that, with much laughter and goodwill, shoppers gathered round and bought tickets. I hadn’t realised until after the group left to catch their bus ‘up the coast,’ that this happy scene had been observed by many. A shopkeeper came out and commented on the scene of unusual cheer.
To Jason and his mates, “Thank you” for your genuine interest and efforts on behalf of the Hospice Movement. You made my day.
