What is Day Group?

It may sound clichéd, but Hospice really is much more than just a building. One of the many activities that happen regularly at Hospice is Day Group, a vitally important service for our patients and their carers.

Day Group runs every Wednesday from 10am – 1pm and provides a wonderful opportunity for those who are terminally ill to have support and companionship, while their carers have a break.

The benefits of Day Group for patients are many. It offers a change of environment and the opportunity to share half a day with other people in a similar situation – people who understand. They are able to discuss problems or concerns with the Day Group nurse and staff in a warm and supportive environment. Patients chat together, enjoy entertainment or the opportunity to experience relaxing aromatherapy, or they can join in games of housie, card games, even sing-a-longs.

The highlights of each Day Group gathering are the morning tea and stunning lunch that are prepared by Hospice volunteers. There is never a bad word said about the food!

Those who wish to participate in Day Group but don’t have transport, can be collected and dropped back home by volunteer drivers.

While the patients are enjoying themselves, their carers are also benefiting. After looking after their loved one for 24 hours a day, seven days a week, Day Group gives them an opportunity to take regular time out for themselves during which time they are able to catch up on things they have not been able to do while caring for their loved one.
