Healing after Loss

The death of a partner ushers us into one of the most profound experiences of grief we will ever face, with all the natural response to loss that are a part of it. While there are many similarities in how people grieve it is still an individual process. Grieving can be hard work and sometimes a lonely journey. Not everyone will understand what you are going through and adjustment to loss takes time and patience. Grief is not a linear journey, it is more like a roller coaster ride with highs and lows.

For this reason we offer this group to assist you to understand what is happening to you and adjust to the loss that has occurred.

Many people find attending a group helpful.  We try not to have more than 10 people in a group.  By joining a group of people who share the experience of losing a loved one, feelings of loneliness and isolation are often reduced.  Our groups aim to be informal and welcoming. We encourage you to attend as it may be useful to you at this time.

Topics covered include the following:

Veterans Support Day.
People who have experienced a previous support group welcome you.

Grieving Our Losses.
“Is this how I should be feeling?”  We look at grief and how it
affects people.

Remembering.
You are invited to introduce your loved one to the group.  We invite people to bring a photograph or other items that are significant to your relationship.

Reflecting.
We reflect on the illness and death of your loved one and the funeral.  Emphasis will be on how all of this has, and is impacting on your life.

Restructuring Relationships.
We consider the changes that the loss has brought to your life.  How has the loss affected your various relationships?

The Legacy of Loss.
We also take time to reflect on the learning and person you have become as a result of your relationship with your loved one.  What are the legacies that will always remain for you?

Looking Forward.
While it may be too soon to think too far ahead, we will consider future options.  We will look at who supports you and the type of support you need.

Endings.
As our sessions come to an end we will reflect on our journey together.  Death ends a life but it does not end a relationship, looking to the future with our loved one in our hearts.
