Waiting at the Station

I am waiting at the last station before I leave this world. As a resting place this station exceeds all others. Its name is North Shore Hospice and has conveniences more numerous than a five star hotel, except there is no bar, a factor which does not concern me in my present state of health.

Because the time of my demise was uncertain, I arrived here quite early, on a Sunday morning. Doctors and nurses thought that was a wise thing to do. Even though it was a Sunday, within an hour of my arrival, every attention was given to my comfort including a large airy ensuite type room, adjustable bed, as well as all the paraphernalia a terminally ill patient requires. In the first hour a doctor gave me a good examination, explaining to my wife and myself where my body had failed and what was going to be done about it. Well as much as was practical.

My wife of fifty five years tells me she also received superb treatment, not the doctors examination, but a tour of the station, shown where she could cook or order meals, make cups of tea and use the shower at any time. Tea or coffee along with delicious home baking was offered to her frequently, the initial one, again in that first hour. There was even a bed available so that she could keep me company. A comprehensive booklet helped her to learn of other features this station provides.

There are so many more wonderful things I could elaborate on but I may run out of time and superlatives. I do want to say though that the two of us have not the words to express our appreciation of the efficiency, kindness, and compassion shown to us by all who service this station. Administrators, Doctors, Nurses, Clerical Staff, Volunteers, Cooks and Cleaning Ladies and everyone else I say, 'it has been another experience waiting here and I will leave in a very peaceful state of mind for which my wife will be eternally grateful'. A sentiment our family firmly endorses.
